in January of 2017 partner Elizabeth Hellstern and I moved the Solidcore sculpture and design studio from the BoilerRoom in Flagstaff, Arizona to a 44 acre parcel of juniper/pine low forest/dry high desert on the slopes of the Ortiz Range just south of Santa Fe, New Mexico. We call this new location SkyHeart as it is at 6,500 foot elevation with a 365 degree view of Santa Fe to the north, the Rio Grande valley to the west, the plains to Oklahoma to the east and the Ortiz mountains south. We float above the view, we are in the sky.
The land is dry and gravel. From the ground we pull heart shaped rocks daily as we dig foundations and lay in paths and roads. We combined the hearts and the sky to name the place SkyHeart. We have established the creative spaces here as SkyHeart Studios and registered the name.
I have several large sculpture commissions to complete: more Grass Ballet projects with 7, 13 and 18 blades each and a second, smaller version of SkyPalace. This new one will only stand 35’ tall instead of the previous 78’ or whatever it was. Aluminum, granite, DMX controlled LED lighting and stretch fabric all are still the materials and elements of these new works.
