Welcome to KoaKrystals.com an element of SOLIDCORE
KoaKrystals are a collection of rare faceted Hawaiian Koa wood blocks showing a multitude of colors and patterns. The block faces are cut through the grain in plain, cross and quarter sawn angles revealing 3D effects that mesmerize. Keep these as a pocket sculpture, on your desktop in a stack or in your travel art collection to connect you back to Hawaii Island and to the majestic energy of beautiful Hawaiian koa wood.
About koa trees: Acacia Koa is an endemic tree found only in Hawaii. Typically it grows in groves from 2,000’ (600m) to 7,000’ (2,100m). Trees can reach over 100’ (30m) in height and can have a base diameter of 6’ (2m) or more. Koa is a dense wood similar to walnut. Characteristics that make koa so desirable are its rich grain patterns, varying colors from blonde to honey to deep reds and burgundy and its solid density. Figured koa wood has a quilting or fiddle back pattern in areas where the wood was in compression or tension. It is a protected species since rapid deforestation for lumber and land development have rendered its once broad range. Koa is sought globally as one of the most rare and beautiful woods anywhere. We use only storm felled, structure threatening or natural death koa in our KoaKrystals.
As with all natural products there will be variations in the wood. Downed trees are sometimes starting to decompose. We extract the solid heartwood from these trees and occasionally uncover softer material as we mill. KoaKrystals may include these soft spots, some knots and healed cracks. These are unique traits and intentionally left. These signs of life are to be experienced like all of nature: imperfectly perfect and to be cherished as such.
Available in sizes S/M/L and XL. The smallest are the size of a large watch face and the XLs are as big as your opened hand. Pricing is variable depending on size and degree of figure in the wood. Each KoaKrystal is unique, signed and therefore individually priced.
